Move over Girl Talk, Jay-Fay in the building

by

When music from St. Louis shows up in my inbox, I generally grow skeptical. I hate to shit on the city I love, but the sad truth is that St. Louis is generally a cultural black hole where creative stagnation is overarching. Sadly, many artists in the city still trying to emulate sounds that lost relevancy more than five years ago. That being said, every once in a while St. Louis produces something wholly unnatural. Josh Fagin, aka Jay-Fay is the prime example. Seemingly unaffected by the bad taste surrounding him, Jay-Fay’s debut full length “Cover Show Mixtape” mashes up some of the best in hip hop and electro(and runs together as a mix). We’re talking Eric Prydz meets Major Lazer meets Kanye meets Daft Punk meets ODB meets No Doubt meets Lil Boosie. Did I mention that Jay-Fay is only 16 years old? While the marketability of mashups may be questionable, its pretty clear that this kid has a very bright future ahead of him. Download the album as a mix below, or download the individual tracks via the Jay-Fay bandcamp.
