A Lull – “Weapons for War”

by

Chicago based pillow rockers A Lull make life difficult for me. Their music up until now put me in a strange state of confused excitement. Aside from a Broken Social Scene comparison on their last single “Skinny Fingers“, the group has avoided a label that has stuck, almost to their detriment when I couldn’t accurately describe the band. I was a little confused about whether the group was trying focus in on a niche indie direction, or do something wholly new. “Weapons for War” answers the question in impressive fashion and the song is all their own. Their influences widely ranged and expertly balanced, from indigenous Australian or Beatles-esque Indian overtones to vocal stylings that lie somewhere between Pinback and Buddhist ohm chants. The groups’ rhythms are something for Doves to be proud of. “Weapons for War” is the culmination of a painfully promising body of work.
